a bunch of us had bought ticket in to Siem Reap..and out from Hanoi
our trip is for 1 week

From SR, take morning bus to PP. About USD8, air-con & comfortable with brief lunch stop at Kompong Thom. In five hours you will be in PP. From PP, again take morning bus to HCMC City with border crossing at Bavet/Mocbai. About USD10, and you will be dropped off late afternoon at De Tham St..lots of cheap GH in the vicinity. You can get open ticket from Sinh Cafe, about USD25 - all the way to Hanoi. The advantage of open ticket is you can drop off at any point (city/town) along the bus route and hop back again another day.
So all you have to plan is where you want to make the stopovers...Any further info, msg me..

The biggest problem I can see for your trip is the fact that you'll be spending most of that week on a bus - no thanks!

You can fly the SGN to HAN leg on. There is also a bus from Siem Reap to HCMC if you don't want to visit Phnom Penh. Sapaco and Mekong Express do this route. If you do choose the open tour option that 'dana' suggested, I would take the overnight buses. You can go from HCMC to Nha Trang overnight. A day or so at the beach, overnight bus to Hoi An. 1-2 days there, on to Hue. Overnight bus from Hue to HAN. That will save some of your days for sightseeing and sleep on the bus. This also saves 3 nights accommodation. I talk about the open tour from HCMC to Nha Trang on my blog. My photos cover all of this, from SR to PP to HCMC to HAN. Send me a PM if you have questions. we love ur suggestion..but due to time constrain i dun think we afford to travel station by station...n will b vr tiring on 3 night bus..so our option now will be
take a bus from Siem Reap to HCMC
then from HCMC, we will find ways to Hanoi DIRECTLY, so i bet the options include:
i) JetStar...quite a good deal i think, but actually we would prefer land route...so i would like to know...
1. is there any DIRECT NON STOP train from HCMC to Hanoi, how long it takes and how much it cost?
2. is there any DIRECT NON STOP bus from HCMC to Hanoi, how long it takes and how much it cost?
Siem reap to Hanoi via Ho Chi Minh city is a long way for one week . For 1 week try, siem reap, phnom penh, ho chi minh city . I think even that is to much for 1 week, unless you fly .

I looked up the train between HCMC-HaNoi. For a sleeper berth it quoted $62. Takes 3 days. No non stop. I vote you fly this route. Look to read about trains in VN. HCMC to Nha Trang is overnight, NT to Hoi An is overnight, Hue to HaNoi is overnight. So figure 3 days and $45. Bus will stop in all the major cities. Too much bus or train for me, fly it. Good luck with your planning.
Take Mikes advice - fly..........look at the forums regarding bus/coach travel.
It is about a 1000 mile journey form HCMC to Hanoi.
The trains only have one track!
