Hi, wondering if anyone could advice me. My bf and are are going travelling at the start of December 09. He has decided to buy a round the world ticket from London stopping at Hong Kong, Auckland, LA and back to London. I have got around £4000. I was thinking of just getting a return ticket from london to Hong Kong. My mum has got a house in HK and macau so I was thinking of spenting a month between those places so it wont cost me a lot to stay there.then I wanted to go to vietnam (Hanoi) on the train from Hong Kong (do you think thats the best way and the cheapest way to get there is by train?)then another train or bus/coach down to Camodia. and heading towards Thailand, Malaysia, Samatra, Java Island, Bali, Philppines and back to Hong Kong.
hello there, i believe there is a transportation mode from HK to Vietnam . And from there to Cambodia and Thailand. From Bangkok, u can actually take a train to Kuala Lumpur, and from Kuala Lumpur u can also take train or bus to Singapore. Or, if u want to skip singapore, u can take Air Asia (cheap air ticket) flight to Bali.

Shell,
Try for fares and travellers reports on the Hong-Kong-HaNoi train route. There is another option, but it is more expensive. Air Asia flies HKG-BKK for under $100. Arrives late at night, then early morning flight BKK-HAN, less than $100.
I suggest you use the bus system when going from HAN to HCMC. Cheaper and more flexibility on scheduling. You can stay 1 day or 10 in each city heading south to HCMC. My blog talks about open tour and from Nha Trang to HCMC. Many bus companies go daily from HCMC to Phnom Penh, about $12. Cambodian visa taken care of on the bus, $25. Bus is $10 up to Siem Reap, boat around $30, depends on where you buy it. Overpriced IMO, take the bus. You can go overland from Siem Reap to BKK in one long day, read about the route .
You have train/bus/plane options when heading down to the Thailand beaches. I vote you use the overnight gov't bus. You save one night's accommodation and arrive in the early am. Perfect time to find a place to stay. You have enough time to visit both coast, hit Samui/Phanghan, then over to Krabi/Phi Phi. Bus to Hat Yai and then you can take the train or bus to Malaysia.
Good luck with your planning and send me a PM if you have questions.

It is very possible to take the train from Hong Kong to HaNoi. You have to do it in stages. HK to Guangzhu, Guangzhu to Nanning, then Nanning to HaNoi. Unfortunately there is no cheap flight HKG-HAN.
