What's the cheapest you've ever done an RTW year?

What's the cheapest anyone here has actually gone for a year on without really having to work & what kind of places were you able to go? I'm just asking basically what would be the cheapest you could do an RTW on?

Less than , or .

The cheapest way to do an RTW is to cycle.

I lurk a bit on a big German cycle touring forum and there are people there who have gotten by on 9,000 EUR for a whole year of cycle touring. In this time they have usually made it from Europe all the way down to South East Asia. Some were planning to fly from Singapore or so to Australia or NZ for a working holiday year. Others flew to the USA or Canada and planned to cycle all the way down to South America.

Most people who cycle need about 3-5 years to complete their RTW trip. So the total cost of the RTW is not that cheap, but the cost for a year of cycle touring is a lot less than for travelling by plane, bus and train.

Look I know I have asked before, I'm just saying if you had €15,000 what kind of a RTW trip could you reasonably have? Would you be greatly limited to the places you could go? If you balanced your tme properly could you take in Europe & North America as well or would that be really just a third world budget? I'm sorry I've asked before but just to give me an estimate, for those of you planning a 12-month RTW trip how much would you get started with?

I'm sorry Marcus - but are you ever going to make a decision or just keep asking the same question over and over? Your questions involve different monetary totals but the basic question always remains the same. The only way anyone is going to offer up information - at this point in time - is when you have some type of itinerary in mind and state said itinerary.

Basically, yes, you can do Europe, North America and the "third world" on €15,000 (~$21,000USD) if you budget well. As mentioned in some of your other threads, if you don't state you plans, you have given members nothing to work with - they aren't going to plan your trip for you. So, once again, please be more specific as none of us are mind readers.

I have done 2 rtw's. One was much cheaper than the other although both were different routes altogether. No surprise that the 1st one cost me a lot more. It was just a rushed job and I didnt really organise myself properly. On the 2nd trip 3 years later in 2003 I was so much more wary of ever day spends and thats where I started to save. I did some work, mostly illegally in a few countries but it was only to top up a bit when I felt like taking a break from continuous trains and buses. I worked on a few farms and also valeted cars for awhile.
My 1st trip in 2000 cost me around £12000. That included my flight/s. My 2nd trip cost me less than £10000 including flights again. My digs were mainly campsites or sharing with friends I met on my trip. I hardly ever ate food in a cafe or restaurant. The best food I had on both trips was when I was invited to a wedding and I scoffed the whole time like I hadnt eaten for days. I find that most of my expense went on transport. Food and accommodation wasnt that expensive on the 2nd trip. Both trips were for just around 10 months.

Marcus. Where are you - and do you have a passport?

Message to all. Shall we plan a trip for Marcus?

How long would some money last, if I went somewhere, for a certain amount of time?

It's the same, I know. But I say we get his budget and plan the whole thing - which countries, which cities, what to see, even which hostels to stay in - but he's got to go.
