hello! i am planning a 3 week trip in march 2010 to europe. i have my flight, rail, & countries figured out, but i'm having trouble planning which destinations in each country to visit. i am not interested in a 'touristy' experience, but more of a 'through the backdoor' to other cultures. the countries on my itin are, respectively, sicily italy switzerland austria slovenia croatia montenegro albania greece romania bulgaria & hungary. any suggestions?
That's less than 2 days per country, unless I've misunderstood. You'll see the inside of an awful lot of trains! Not alot else. I seriously, seriously think you should consider cutting a fair proportion of places off the itinerary. Given that you want to keep those start/end points, how about leaving Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia for another time, maybe Albania and Greece and possibly Bulgaria as well.
That would leave you with a route that goes Sicily-->mainland Italy-->Croatia-->Bosnia Hercegovina-->Serbia-->Romania-->Hungary. This is still way too much in my opinion, but not quite as crazy as the original idea. Also this would give you the chance to take in Mostar in Bosnia, which is a bit off the beaten track, also Serbia is not much visited by western tourists at the moment.
yes, i'm not so crazy now, lol. i've narrowed my countries down to croatia bosnia serbia & romania.
thanks so much for the tip on mostar in bosnia!!
