Your question is too hard to answer because it depends on a lot of things, and China might be more expensive than you think. But hey, you can always call up the airline and change the ticket to an earlier date if you become bored or run out of money
Changing your plane ticket costs $100 AUD for Quantas and free if you travel with Air China or China Easterm (Could charge you extra if you change at peak times). So don't worry, just go out there and enjoy yourself.

By the way, don't forget to do a border run every 2 month, I think the traveler's visa lasts 60 days max, and you have to exit the country and enter again.

You can speak good Mandarin!!! Honestly 5 months in China is not too long only if you have your itinerary planned! yes China is very a vast and interesting country but if you go alone you will probably bore to die. The cost is not easy to estimated cause it depends on what you eat what you buy etc..... since you will be backpacking, it shouldnt be too pricey.

Since you have been to China three times I reckon you have visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guilin, Nanjing...... So im going to recommand something slighty different. Shenzhen is worth to visit. It takes about 3 hours from Beijing to Shenzhen by air. Place like Window of the World, Splendid China are worth visiting. I personally suggest a place called "China South City" to you. You can find inpexpensive traditional stuffs and clothing there. Impressed me a lot the last time I visit.

Hope you have a good trip

you'll get bored if you dont know what you want to do...

most young travellers feel guilty, about doing nothing but get drunk every night... they eventually think its laime...

5 months, when you meet interesting people can be short.

Boredom is a kiss of death.... but it is a state of mind. 5 months is enough time to just get a great China experience.
