I think it is definitely related to your familiarity with Thailand...or wherever it is you want to travel.
I take it you have travel insurance? If so, I'd read through the conditions very carefully. You may find your insurance will be void if you travel to a country that you country of origin has put out a travel warning advising their citizens not to travel to for saftey reasons.

I am currently travelling Australia and then New Zealand, I am suppose to arrive in Bangkok on the 7th June.....depending on all the protests. Does anybody know how bad it actually is out there as I have been told so many different things from different people.
I really to go but obv if it is unsafe I will wait and travel there when it has all cleared up.

Not all of Bangkok is affected by the protests. Some of the reporting in other countries make it look like the city is completely full of Redshirts but it is not. Most of the protests are in specific areas. This doesn't mean that a protest could not show up in other areas though. Some of the latest news is that there is some sort of agreement between the leaders of this group and the authorities that will lead to an end - hopefully!
I was in Bangkok 3 days ago and the Sukhumvit Road area from Soi 1 down was pretty normal. Keep in mind that these protests are not directed against tourists. If a tourist "gets down and close" to any confrontations between Redshirts and police they could be in harms way but just do your best to avoid those areas.
There are lots of other places in Thailand you can visit. June is low season so you do not have to obligate yourself to any specific hotel. You can get most hotels with just a walk-in so just choose a place that is not in an area of confrontation (usually where the government offices are located and immediate nearby neighborhoods.) Often you can get a reservation by calling directly from the airport. The Sukhumvit Road area, low number end, has lots of places to stay at in all price ranges. So far Sukhumvit Road has been free of most protests.

It's over...
The settlement is close to be completed and people are too tired. While I'm typing now and here, they are going home already. Shops and department stores in that area are starting to get back to their businesses.
I saw tourists on the streets while I went out for lunch today.
