Your question is largely industry specific.
Looking for hospitality work? Then get out and about with plenty of resumes and go from cafe to bar that suits and ask to speak to someone about jobs.
Looking to pick up labouring work? This is often done through agencies you would need to register with or also in classified in papers and the Internet (gumtree.com.au)
The same goes with admin/professional positions - these jobs often largely recruit through employment agencies such as Hudson, Hays etc.
If you are planning to stick in the one spot for a while you could also try seek.com.au as this is probably the biggest jobs portal in Australia.
Another valuable tool is jobs and notices boards in hostels, these often have short term jobs that need to be filled quickly.
