Backpacking in Peru- need some tips

Travelling to Peru in August. Planning on a couple treks near Huaraz, and Arequipa.

it is recommened to carry your bottled water most visitting people do this, it is no recommendable to draw water from rivers and creeks so that this could be contaminated .

If you will visit Cusco you must take the Coca leaf tea is its such a perfect solution for altitude.

Enjoy your trip!

You would go crazy looking for a river or stream every time you became a little thirsty. In Peru, you do not have to look far in any city or village to find a bottle of water, the cost is about $0.35 USD per 1/2 liter. Even along the jungle trails to Machu Pichu there will be traders along the trails, though the water can be a bit more expensive, maybe $1 USD per 1/2 liter. I travelled in Peru last summer & carried a 'Steripen' for purification, but never had the need. Good travels.

When travelling in Ecuador I took a Steripen. In most places the tap water tasted alright and we sanitized it with the Steripen (a little device that uses UV light to sterilize water). We carried purification tablets as a backup and bought bottled water in areas where the tap water was terrible (Galapagos!). I really did not want to use so many plastic bottles and found that this solution worked pretty well.
