Central America Bound....Costa Rica VS Guatemala VS Honduras

Hello...

Try Tamarindo in Costa Rica. Has all the ingredients you mention. Fly into Liberia Intl. airport, 45 mins. to the coast. Nahua might be your place to stay at. Have fun!

There's no nightlife in Flores or Santa Elena, where you'll stay if you want to go to Tikal. You'll hate that.

Antigua has nightlife, and I beleive that some people are going there now solely for the nightlife...but there's no water. You'll hate that.

Nicaragua is cheaper than anyplace else. It has water and surfing and boating and nightlife pretty much only in San Juan Del Sur
But it's a fun place. Lots of hipsters. You'll probably like that. And it's not hard to get to from Managua, which is a dull shithole with nothing of any real interest to see.

The real winner is Costa Rica. Lots of water, lots of jungle lots of services, lots of nightlife in several places and everywhere is close to the airport. Tamarindo is a good choice....Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side....Jaco, I have heard, is even more a party town than it was the last time I was there, five years ago. Costs a lot more than Nica, but lots to do.

Still I side with Nica. They need the tourist money more.

Thank you for your replies! I looked a little at Tamarindo, it looks fun...more of a party surf town? I think we are looking for a little bit more of an authentic trip...I can party with tourist whenever I want... I live in S. Lake Tahoe. - looked at Flying to San Jose then taking a train down to Puerto Caldera... So many options so little time....

I travelled in Costa Rica for 2 weeks a few years ago. We flew into San Jose, stayed at hostel pangea which to this day is one of the best hostels I've stayed in (definitely a party to be had). From there we went to La fortuna, Monteverde, Montezuma (on the pacific coast), Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, Cahuita (briefly), and Puerto Viejo. With only ten days I probably wouldn't try for Manuel Antonio and I probably wouldn't try to visit both coasts.

La Fortuna and Monteverde are both awesome places to go and are both relatively near to San Jose. Neither are coastal towns, but both were totally rewarding and fun places to go. Montezuma was really cool and chill but there wasn't a ton to do. I loved Costa Rica, but I was also disappointed to miss out on Nicaragua - I've heard great things about it). Puerto Viejo was an awesome place and the hostel we stayed at was a ridiculous party and a half - Rockin J's.

Hope this helps.
