Hi all, I'm currently saving for a RTW trip- it won't be until at least the middle of next year, so I have a while to plan.
Regarding flights, from reading around the forum it seems that most of you have booked it all, like as a RTW trip? I was planning on just booking my initial flight in advance, and then try and find cheap flights/other transport as I move around. I figured it would be most sensible, seeing as I don't know the exact route that I want to travel in yet (I know which countries I want to visit, just not in what order!) However now I am considering costs, which would be cheaper?? Is it possible to book a RTW ticket without giving exact dates, or even exact months?? Because if that works out cheaper then that would be perfect. :D
I hope my post makes sense, haha. Thanks in advance for any help.
Most (all?) RTW tickets allow for free date changes, so as long as you know the total travel time will be less than a year, and don't mind too much that the order in which you visit countries is set, you can just make up some dates for the ticket, and change them as you go. (Although there could be an issue with availability of seats when you're trying to change a date in the near future, so it's not completely ideal.)
It all makes total sense what you're saying.
Fares are totally dependent on where and when you're going - and what's on offer.
For example, just as one pointer - it's possible to get from the UK to Australia for less than £450.
However, finding the bargains involves a lot of searching and also mega-patience too.

I have gone for the book as you go option. My partner and I are travelling from
UK - SEA - OZ - NZ - SA - NA - UK
The RTW tickets seemed expensive if you want to do both south and north America.
Currently we have booked
UK to KL
KL - Krabi
KL - Brisbane
Really cheap so far but now I think I am gonna struggle to find a cheapy flight from NZ to South America
Fingers crossed there's some bargains out there

Great homework and very well worked out. Doubt you'll find any alternative routes cheaper.
As for your plans from NZ to South America, your best bet is from Auckland to the USA - then onward. Of all the NZ international airports, Auckland has the most international flights in and out.
Check-out it's website for departures and arrivals. It'll show you what airlines use it and their times....

I'm a newcomer to TP myself. It was recommended to me by a friend who has been here for years and is now a moderator.
