You can travel to Ko Samui by your own because there is no dangerious situation there unlike Bangkok that you should keep away as much as possible for the time being. -snip- Have a good time on visiting Thailand.

I wouldn't worry about it, Ko Samui is full of solo travellers and group travellers, you will meet so many people! You will meet people at your guesthouse/at restaurants/on day trips everywhere, you couldnt really think of a more social place! Trust me, you will have loads of people in the same boat as you to hang out with so don't worry about it!

Ko Samui is a great island to start your travels on but don't just limit yourself to one island. Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao are slightly more remote and stunning. Only short boat ride out there too and easy to find accommodation. Like the others say, you will meet a bunch of people out there no problem.
