Please help, Melbourne to Cairns or Cairns to Melbourne???

Hey every body,

Hey every body,

me and my friend Jodie are super confused and need your help desperately!!

we l arrive in Melbourne 27th September 2010, and we plan on being in oz until Mid January. We have already booked our NYE accommodation for Sydney.

we have been told that it will be wet season with stingrays everywhere in Cairns November - May, so our dilemma is do we get a flight straight from Melbourne to Cairns, work our way down to Sydney for NYE and then continue on the Melbourne, to the get a flight back to Cairns to continue out trip onwards

OR

if we was to stay in Melbourne and work our way up to Cairns, as we arrive in the wet season are we really limiting our selves to what we can do? but then we wont have to pay for the flights and we can save money.

These are

How long would you say we would need to travel from Sydney to Cairns?

It depends on your interests and what you wish to do, and the number of places you wish to stay. Anywhere from two weeks to five or six.

Hi Emma,

Although it would cost some money, I would certainly go for your first option and start in Cairns. The box jellyfish can be a pain and swimming is not recommended for sure. A trip to the Great Barrier Reef won't be problem I guess, been there in April and had no problems.
Still, the weather is much nicer, both in the north and the south as you will be in the south when summer has started over there! The south in October can still be quite cool sometimes, especially around Melbourne.

Check the to see which airlines serve Cairns. If you book now I am sure you will still find good deals.

Have fun!
Michael.

I agree with Michael and option 1 if you're just travelling from Cairns to Melbourne, the weather will be more agreeable for you and stingers (jellyfish and the like) will be less of a problem. You shouldn't have a problem with stingrays

Have you already booked your flight into Melbourne and out of Cairns which is why you need to take internal flights?

Thank you so much for the advice.

yes we have already booked our flights into Melbourne and out of Cairns, I asked the travel agent why she did that and she said it was because we didn’t have enough miles left on our RTW ticket to do it the other way.

I looked at the costs of getting buses to and WOW they are so much more expensive than planes according to the Lonely Planet guide.

So does any one know if the flights are a lot cheaper if we book them now, rather than booking when we are there?

thanks again

Emma

Airlines are in competition with each other hence the flight prices. Not to mention it's so much quicker.

Unless an airline has a "sale", the closer to your travel time, the more expensive the flight. In 2008, Melbourne to Cairns was $199 each way. Picking a random date (September 30th) Jetstar are showing $239 one way. Me? I'd be booking my flight now. September is school holidays, (Sept 18th to Octiber 3rd here in Victoria) flights will be heavily booked.
Not all states have their school hols at the same time.
