I dont have much knowledge about those places you are going to visit but I can tell you air travel in China is absolutely safe and not expensive. I know a place called "China South City" in Shenzhen, China is worth to visit. You can find inexpensive traditional stuffs and nice scenery there.
I am thinking I should start visiting China too cause there are so many beautiful places.

SHANGHAI to guilin is like 26 hours by train...
Kunming to Guilin, probably the same...
Chongqing from Shanghai was hell, It was more than 30...
If you can afford it, FLY... it aint that expensive if you book in advance... But if you can get sleeper tickets the trains are good way to travel. Some destinations are very close, its a matter of hours...
Guilin, well the attractions are very close... I assume visiting the karst studded county of Yangshuo.

I'm going to China for a number of weeks in July/August. I'm hoping to go to Bejing = Lhasa = Lijiang = Song Shan = Guilin
Is that a rough route or places you want to visit, but isnt Song Shan On the other side of China to Lijiang? You could head south from Beijing and head towards Song Shan, I think Zhengzhou or Luoyang are the closest major hubs to it and easy to get to via train from Beijing. Then maybe head towards Chengdu (stop off in Xi'an maybe as its a fantastic city), Chengdu is the jumping off point for trips into Tibet and if you could fly into Lijiang from Lhasa thatd be even handier as its a pain to get to if you arent flying.
I ended up travelling from Lijiang to Kunming and then a train to Guilin.
If you cut up your journey travelling times shouldnt be too bad between places, usually overnight sleeper trains, they vary I think my longest train ride was 18 hours but most were around 12 hours.

Hey thanks for all your replies - they're all really helpful.
We're now thinking that as we are trying to do so much in such a short amount of time that we'd cut it down a bit. And yes - flying seems to be the only time-friendly way for us to travel.
So from Beijing to Xi'an
Xi'an to Guilin
from Guilin to Ha Noi in Vietnam
Do you guys know how expensive these kind of routes would be - do you think it'd be better to include this in a round-the-world ticket or just go domestic?
Also how easy is it to visit Tokyo from China? Say from Beijing or Hong Kong (if needs be)

Internal flights are pretty cheap with the budget airlines, at least they were when I was there last year. Not that much more than a ticket for a soft sleeper on a train.
How much time have you got to play with in China? If you can, use the trains, its a great way to see the countryside and an interesting experience if you go hardsleeper.
Unfortunately not long!
We're probably only have about 4 weeks to cover these three areas (not including Hong Kong) so flights are probably the way to go I imagine.
We are aiming for Beijing as it's Beijing & near the great wall
Xi'an for the Terracotta Army and a couple of sights nearby
and Guilin for the Li River/mountain scenery, a bit of Kayaking and generally the many good things we have heard about it.
If we go to Hong Kong it's for only a couple of days - no more.
Sound like an ok timescale?
