Hi all,
I think there are pros and cons to each and every way. It really is specific to what you want, time you have and I think the weather too.
For instance I went 6 months to South America. Having an open jaw ticket suited perfectly as I managed to go into Rio and follow the weather for 6 months taking in everything I wanted to see and fly out of Lima.
Note that some RTW tickets will include the distance between your overland airports as milage. I believe that to be the case anyway.
For my next travel the intention is to fly into say Delhi and do a circular trip taking in North India then Napal then fly out of there to say Bangkok then do a circular route round SE Asia flying back out of Bangkok then onto Oz and do something similar. I think this can help keep the cost down. Of course I could be wrong.
The issue with going back to where you came in being that maybe the weather will have been great at one point then awful when you return. Sometimes you just don't want to go to the same place again too.
i got a rtw ticket but for eg i fly into beijing but got to go to shanghai then hk overland and fly out of hk. when im in thailand i am going overland to cambodia and vietnam and in aust i fly into perth and out of syndey, new zealand fly into south island out of north, fly into LA and out of Miami so i need to travel overland to get out of the countries again
