New Year in China: any tips?

Hey everybody!

The Chinese will celebrate "our" new year too. I spent a long time in Hong Kong and they know how to party. Fortunately there is not the drunken lout element that occurs in the UK and similar places (With the possible exception of course of Dubai and the UAE for obvious reasons :-) )

What you will find is great food and pretty cheap too. Mosquito's used to be my downfall in Hong Kong and when I visited Canton too so take plenty of repellent or buy some as soon as you get there thinking about it.

William James Coppin (Aka moi!) quite fancies a trip back to China at some stage as I haven't been for a good long while so please do let us know how you get on out there.

I dont know much about chinese but I v heard that the Chinese New Year is celebrated for about fifteen days is one moment in the year when the whole nation feels united as they can imagine each others enjoyment.

For the International New Year Eve, you should go to a club, because that's really all that happens in Shanghai. M1NT if you're looking for something really expat with champagne, but every club has some special event.

For Chinese New Year, you DO NOT want to be in a club, you want to be in the street as Chinese people will play with fireworks until around minight!

Hi~
Although I have not any experenice on celebration the "New Year" in China , I think that most of the China chinese are not that much interesting to do this celebration. Of course someone will do some celebration in Beijing/ Shanghai because most of the foreignner live / working there now.

If you will stay in China more than 2 months, let say depart China after Feb03, 2011. You can see how Chinese people to celebrate the "Luna New Year" . Totally different with when they celebrating the "New Year".

You can see everybody will clean up their home few days before the "luna new year". Buy some new cloths, candys , preparing the red pocket , going the "Year-end" night market and meet their family member within their 4- 10 days publich holidays. ( Hong Kong only 3 days but as I remember , china having around 10 - 15 days...)

Something special is you can see the different animals each year. 2010 is the year of Tiger , and 2011 will be year of Rabbit. You can see Rabbit everywhere =)

Normally you can buy nothing duing this period... You will see the red poster post on the shop door , and said " kung hei fat choi ( means wishing you to be rich), we will reopen after ...."

May be it will be a different feeling to you =)
