If somebody you know told you they were going on a trip, and asked you to challenge them to do 1 thing while they were away, what would it be?
Sample some of the local cuisine, the more obscure the better!
sleep on the street with a homeless person and buy them and their pals a good meal.
learn the local language
Learn a habit/tradition of the locals that you will bring home to your friends.
Visit a local place of worship and find out from the parson/priest or an elder inhabitant how you can be useful to the community.
Learn enough of the language to get in touch with a local and learn a little of how life is like for the "average" citizen there.
learn the local language or the local culture.
If you go to China, you should know about the Chinese culture, like some about the descendants of dragon.
Learning the local language is a good challenge. Of course, that's easier if you're visiting New Zealand than if you are visiting Tajikistan. ;-)
I'd challenge my friend to travel without either a guidebook or a phrasebook, and without a guide or tour. That would be very difficult in some countries, but you'd probably have a far more interesting (perhaps too interesting!) trip.
