Other good options would chiefly be to just make you own way through the country. There's a superb network of regular buses going everywhere you'd want to go, and car rental is relatively cheap. You'll still meet plenty of people in hostels everywhere, so I can heartily recommend doing things on your own; you'll have far more freedom with deviating from any set itinerary, and lingering in unexpected places you discover liking a whole lot.
There's also the magic bus and stray, which offer pretty much the same experience as the kiwi experience, if with a bit less of a reputation for lots of partying. (Kiwi Experience isn't all negative though; there's plenty of people who go with them and end up having a really good time, and all these companies do take you to a large number of very awesome places.)
Definitely ignore your travel agent's recommendation for which company to travel with; they're just in it for the large commission they'd get.
I've booked the kiwi experience for whilst me and a friend are in NZ during July and August, and have only heard good reviews... obviously I wouldn't like to recommend it yet having not been on it, but I've spoken to people our age (I'm 20) who have said it's an awesome way to meet young people who are in the same position, an easy way to get around, and generally a really good laugh!

I'm doing NZ with kiwi in june til the end of july and I am really excited! i ignored the bad reviews because i want to experience it for myself. looks like fun and i can't wait! go for it.

I am from New Zealand and travel extensively in both the North and South Islands. My advice, if you can afford it, is to hire a camper van and self travel the country.
Going at your own pace and where you like will mean you can stop at the places that interest you and you can move on when you are ready.
New Zealand has some wonderful places to visit, however the tour buses don't seem to take in some of the wonders of the place.
Have you searched and have ideas of places you would like to see when you are here?

Hey i'm almost living in NZ at the mo & would agree that the best way esp for young people like yourself (&myself) is to relax totally, don't book any package tours or whatnot, & just use the bus services (naked bus & intercity do real cheap deals & the trains are good) you literally will meet people everywhere & end up with tonnes of offers of accomodation & parties & travel buddies! Just be open to conversation with everybody & with a smile you'll go far You'll love it!

im in the same situation. Im a solo female traveller (28)
i will be also going to the Pacific Islands before hand and kiwi offers a FIji /NZ combo
However, i read a lot about Kiwi experiences being a really young crowd and not sure if that would be right for me.
The other operators offer the tours with accomodation too which obviously makes it look really expensive up front but might actually work out around the same in the end.
