As a tourist, I didn't love Vietnam, but it had its charms, and yes, I have seen amazing shorelines and those long boats were postcard perfect imagery.
Hanoi is less touristy than most places in Vietnam i thought . If you stay in the old Quarter you are just gonna see tourist things and get tourist hassle . I hate Saigon but thought Hanoi was a lot more chilled, hassle free and more traditional .
I`d rather live there than Saigon any day ..
Obviously you never got off the tourist trail in Hanoi? Personally, I love Hanoi and would rather live there than practically any other place in SE Asia. Have a look at the expat site here:

Why does everyone dislike Ho Chi Minh so much? Once you get out of the touristy bar areas and into the parts people actually live and work in it is a really cool city.
Im off to Hanoi in the spring and I haven't been before but if it's really so much better than HCM I seriously cant wait. I would happily live in HCM if only I could find a job that paid UK min wage lol
After traveling for a month in Vietnam, my choice would be Hoi Ann.
I liked HaNoi better than HCMC, but I would live in DaLat or Nha Trang before either of the 2 big cities.
I see all most of tourists love Hanoi than HCMC. Hanoi is an ancient, peace and beautiful city. But I love living in modern city than it.
In my opinion, Da Lat and Sapa are the best choices
VegasMike, Im looking at doing my PADI Open Water in Nha Trang would you reccomend it?
I loved Hanoi; not sure I could live there though!
