Glad you had a cool trip, im john from Miami, just wanted to know about what to take, Im going for a month. Is the fully packed backpack the correct way to go, or can I just by stuff as I go, like shirts and shorts etc. I dont want to be doing a lot of walking with a huge bag on me.
Where did you stay most of the time, hotels or hostels? are the hostels safe to leave your stuff during the day while you wonder off?

Most younger visitors to Thailand do use a BP. Take the minimum with you. Leave plenty of room to bring home new clothes and souvenirs. I take 1 pair of long pants, nice shirt, tennis shoes on the plane. Sandals, 2 pair of shorts, 2-4 t-shirts, 4 underwear, 2 socks, not much else. Wash more frequently than carry too much. Clothes are so cheap in Asia that you can buy whatever you need for less than it costs at home. Less is better when bumping around SEA.
About accommodation first: hostels/guesthouses are the only way to go. There are some that are dorm style and you might worry a little bit more about those, but for the most part, I felt like everything of mine was always safe, which was good because, like you, I didn't want to lug a huge pack around all the time. But left my netbook and pretty much everything else in the room(s) most of the time. The cheapest accommodation I got was 70B (about $2.60), and I tried never to pay more than 200B for a room. Splitting with people helps immensely if you don't mind sharing a room or a bed.
As for clothes: yes, clothes in SEA are cheap, but they are also complete shit a lot of the time. Lots of people I knew bought things only to have them rip or fall apart shortly after, so take your pick. I was glad to have brought all my clothes from home (and they fit into a really small bag anyway, so it's not like it was a burden).
