Darwin advice please!

hey_monkee has indicated that this thread is about Australia

travel down to katherine at least, and get out bush abit, plenty of work south of darwin, ask at any roadhouse ,last time i visited was for a week and stayed 5 years you will love the place

My husband and I will soon be starting a bit of a RTW working/travelling trip. After working in Aussie for a few months (on the GC), we will be driving our way up and around the north of the country until we get to Darwin. A couple of questions -

1. Is there the possibility of getting work in Darwin short-term? Even something like fruit picking would be fine (we are Kiwis so visas aren't a problem, just wondering whats available)

2. We will be flying out of Darwin and on to Asia. If we won't be working there and its just the last stop on the Aussie leg of our trip, how many days would you visit Darwin for?

Thanks for any advice

There isn't fruit picking in or around Darwin, the closest would be Kununurra in WA which is 825 kms south west of Darwin. When do you plan to do your drive? Peak season for Darwin is June/July/August - the dry season which runs from end April/May to September/October.

Which route will you be taking to get to Darwin? If you're going the Savannah Way you will needa 4WD, even in the dry season although it can still be a bit rough in May. Parts of it are very remote and it's around 2,610kms.
The Overlander's Way from Townsville >Charters Towers> Mt Isa>Tennant Creek would be better, then north up the Stuart Highway to Katherine and on to Darwin. The distance is 2,464 kms.

There is fruit picking almost all year round in Queensland see Fruit picking in

OH, and it's not "Aussie" - it is either Australia or Oz. Aussie is an adjective not the name of the country. An Aussie is an Australian.
Cheers.
