Yes, August is bad cause it's vacation time. Ask Italians for specific dates - I think most of ppl have vacation at same weeks.
2-3 days should b enough for Cinque Terre.
I'd not be going to Naples from there - just because it's far away, but would b going around. You didnt say if it's 1st time in Italy or you already been there.
Genova, Pisa and Lukka just near, stay as much as possible in Toscana - it's endless pleasure and everything included : food, culture, landscape. Lombardia and its lakes and Alps + Piemonte - everything is attractive. It's pity to spend too much time in the road. If you r going to Venice , then may continue up to Dolomites.
ohh.. about food - just great.
Chianti (wine) a lot, going well with everything. Eat ice-cream daily! The best coffee in the world is in Italy. Pasta - that is not what u think, it's art. Good cheese, olives, olive oil. Bread! In the North also exselent meats, mushrooms. Near lakes and the sea - fish & co. Gosh.. hard to stop. Well.. pizza?
Traveling Italy is always great but be prepared for the heat! I was there two years ago at the beginning of July and it was about 100F every day. Really took the wind out of my plans to walk around all day seeing everything I could possibly see. On the plus side, I never had to worry about finding a public restroom because anything I drank was sweated out, lol. Maybe the end of August would be better for heat...
Italy hasn't been overly hot this year
The average high temp for Florence in the beginning of August is 90F. That's pretty hot to walk around all day in.

We did 4 days Cinque Terra. And it was beautiful! Setri Levante, for instance, has a little sandy beach too. So you also can enjoy the water there.
Napoli will take 7 hrs by train, Roma about 4.5 hrs.
I should prefer Roma if you don't mind travelling that much.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. Sometimes you tend to over research and then your back at square one. So thanks again for keeping my head straight.
Vanessa - First time in Italy so of course I want to see it all in a small amount of time - ridiculous I know. The only place I would like to see is Cinque Terre so thanks for the info on days. Toscana would be wonderful. Were there any places in particular that you thought was absolutely amazing? Do you recommend traveling to Venice or should I concentrate on Toscana? and after reading your post i'm a little hungry.
Laurim - hmm maybe Italy in the summer would be a great diet. I'm from Florida so if it's as hot as that well...I guess I'll have to eat loads of ice cream.
Tim - glad to hear it's not so hot but will I still be able to justify the ice cream?
Gurt - Thank you for the distance perspective. It makes more sense to go to Roma instead. I would much rather eat and see than sit on a train. I will take a look at your pictures.
I'm traveling from los Angeles. Which airport should I fly into Genova, Milano or Pisa? or is there a much better airport to fly into to maximize my experience.
