Vitamin B1 to fight off the Mozzies

Hi Guys,

As far as the medical profession is concerned, this belongs to the realm of unproven pseudo-science.

Better stick to classical pharmaceutical treatments; they're much more likely to be effective.

Since you basically asked the same question in the RTW thread, Price of malaria tablets (malarone), I replied there.

Please see for my response about Vitamin B1.

Last year I went on a short holiday to the Caribbean and took a Vit B complex (inc B1), garlic capsules (also said to put off mozzies) and smothered myself in a tropical strength repellent. And I still got several bites. Nothing is 100% effective.

A few weeks ago I came back from West Africa, and have just finished my course (about 11 weeks worth) of Doxycycline. I can honestly say I had very few side effects and those I did have were really not that bad and I'd be happy taking it again.

If you're going to a malarial area the best thing you can do is discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist, including your concerns about side effects and they'll advise you on the best medication to take. Remember, malaria is not just an unpleasant illness - it can kill. Personally I don't think it's worth the risk of going without anti malaria meds.

Thanks for your reply's guys!

What is a VEGEMITE? someone gave me tiny packs of kraft vegemites... its is suppose to be rich in Vitamin B1.

I go with post#4.
I've worked in the travel industry for many years and malaria/mosquito advice is a question that often comes up.
Every town and city in the UK has a centre for tropical diseases not too far away. They're well worth making a call to. That could work out, however, to be the most expensive option in the outcome.
Cheapest?.. As far as natural remedies go (garlic, vitamins, minerals etc.), I've heard very good reports about yeast tablets. They make your skin smell a little iffy - but the mozzys hate the whiff with a passion.
It's an endless debate and even the finest specialists will tell you, there's no real hard and fast remedy for malaria or complete mosquito avoidance.
