cheapest way to travel to China

Hi all,

You don't say how long your trip is? Don't just assume that a one way is the way to go. If you have no experience at all at this sort of thing, I think you'd be better off shopping the travel agents or going down to Chinatown and talking to the ethnic agents. You are fortunate in that the UK is the true center of international travel - the rest of us have far far fewer options.

I think by one way, she meant going into China, from there proceeding to other south Asian countries and taking a flight back from one of them.

The cheapest city to fly into would be Hong kong with cathay pacific I imagine. But It depends what you want to do in China. If you're heading for SE Asia and want to see some of China then start in Beijing. Sounds like you need to decide what you want to see in China first.

If I was you I'd consider flying into Kualar Lumpar or Bangkok and travelling through SE Asia first, as these flights are generally cheaper from the uk. You can enter China from North or North East Vietnam. I did this trip last year. I flew into Bangkok and travelled through Laos, Camboda, Vietnam, fom Hanoi you can get a train direct to Beijing or make stops on the way or ditch the trains and take a bus. Personally I prefered the trains in China. But then buses suck and the chinese trains are some of the best in the world.

However this all depends on how much time you've got, how much money, where you're going next. Im guessing you want to go to SE Asia?

Actually just did a quick check for you on cheapflighs.co.uk from london to Beijing / Hong kong and Bangkok. They are all roughly the same price. About £369 - £400 + Return. So will be cheaper One way but not much at that price.

So I'd get a flight to Beijing.

When you apply for your Chinese Visa in England,(im sure you know you'll need to get one before you enter China). Just check if you need proof of onward travel. As you are entering the country with no outbound ticket. I didn't have any trouble when entering by train. But I could have been lucky.
