DO I NEED A RETURN TICKET TO ENTER BRAZIL??????

im sooo unsure what to do....some say they dont even check if u have a return ticket, but ive also heard stories where people actually have to buy a return ticket at the airport to enter the country???(Which then cost heaps) What to do???? I wanna buy my ticket in the next couple of days....gonna backpack for a year and most likely end up in north america....I dont need any return ticket from Brazil!!!! Do any one know if a ticket from Colombia to mexico would count as a "return ticket"????? Any advise??? I am from norway, so know i dont need any visa......

hey!!!

I'm in exactly the same situation, except I want to fly to Argentina and start my exploring from there onwards. I also want to finally buy my ticket very soon (hopefully tomorrow) after I sort all of my doubts about some of the horror cases I've been reading about where people were not allowed to board the plane because they had a one way ticket.

but I think I finally have it figured out!

from what I was able to find out, it mainly depends on where you're from, and where you're flying to. also, an issue might be the countries where your flight might have a layover/connection.

so in my case, I want to fly from Canada to Argentina (for which I require no visa), but since all the cheap flights are going through the states, it's possible that the US immigration might be asking question if the person looks very dodgy and they suspect they're using this flight as a mean of just staying in the US (not boarding the connecting flight). I called the US immigration/border services at the airport and asked about these cases and if there's a law stating that one cannot buy a one way ticket going through the states. the guy said there's no law prohibiting that, and there's generally no problem at all as long as you make a good case to the immigration people about your travelling plans. I also called the airline and the travel agency and they told me the same thing.

on a side note, in case you do have connections in a country for which you would need a visa, you need to get that visa even if you'll be just in transit! they won't let you board, and that's a guarantee!!!

now, I've also heard/read that even though one might not need a visa to enter a country, the immigration officer at your destination might ask for a return or an exit ticket. it seems that some airlines are afraid that if the person is flown all the way to their destination, and if it turns out they don't have the necessary documents (the exit ticket might be that), they (the airline) will get charged a fine and the traveler might be sent back (though I think that's more likely to happen if you were to go to the states/commonwealth countries than some latin american country, or if you didn't have a visa for a country for which you needed one). that's also a reason why the airlines might be asking more questions and might be even trying to put some pressure on you to buy their return ticket (again, them telling you that you have to buy THEIR ticket or a RETURN ticket is illegal, but it may be likely that you need a ticket of some sort as a proof that you'll be leaving the country eventually).

sorry, this is getting so long, but hopefully it might help a bit..

now speaking of Brazil. Brazil does require a visa for citizens of each country that requires Brazilians to have a visa to enter theirs. So if you're British/European, you will be ok, but US, Canada, and probably Australia and New Zealand as well, will need a visa.

If you need to get a visa, then you need to present a return/exit ticket in order to get the visa.

from my experience, the process is pretty easy, but they sure can be annoying. I was getting my visa done (twice) in 2007 when I was in Buenos Aires. so basically, I didn't need to present a ticket going back from Brazil to Canada (or whichever place somebody might come from), but as long as it was a ticket out of Brazil, that was ok. as said before, you need to have a ticket going to Brazil too before you start. because my idea at the time was to go to Brazil by bus from Uruguay (and i already purchased a bus ticket from brazil coming back to argentina), I was trying to explain to them that i can't buy the bus ticket in advance from argentina, but they were very stern and said that I need to have the ticket before they can give me the visa.

after much thought, what I ended up doing was making a reservation online for a flight to Brazil. I'm sure you can do the same thing (just book it for leaving Brazil to Argentina or someplace else), and it's what I plan on doing as well now, in case I have any issues at the airport/immigration.

use aerolineasargentinas, you can make an online reservation and you receive a confirmation e-mail. you can print both and it looks just like the real e-ticket, except you pay nothing (you have 2 days to finalize the purchase, during which time your seat and flight are secured). they usually have very good deals too (around 80$ for a one way flight, 150 round fare), so even if you do end up having to buy the ticket at the airport, it can be an affordable trip to a different place planned ahead. also, check lan and gol but I'm not sure if they have the option of just making the reservation first before finalizing the purchase.

overall, people travel around the world, continents and countries all the time with (mostly) one way tickets. since that's pretty common, it's highly unlikely that it will be a big issue. also, remember, all of these immigration officers are bureaucrats, so as long as you present them with enough papers corroborating your story and travel plans, it won't be a problem.

also, from my previous experience, nobody has ever asked me for a return ticket (not in Argentina, Uruguay, even the Brazilian border agent wasn't very interested in it... Europe too....). Usually, the "problem" countries are mainly the US, UK and other Commonwealth countries who are very strict with their immigration policies.

ahh, again, sorry for this long rant, but I hope it cleared some doubts you might have had.

good luck with your trip!
