Buenos Aires to Lima

Hi everyone!

you shouldn't do it in one go, much too far. The fastest option is through Chile, following the panamericana up north from Santiago: cheapest if you change busses in Mendoza, Santiago, Arica and Tacna (that way, you won't need to take any international busses, which tend to be more expensive). This should be doable in 48 hours approx if you hurry.

The most scenic route runs through Bolivia: cheapest option there would be BsAs - Salta - La Quiaca - Villazon - Potosì - La Paz - Desaguadero - Puno - Arequipa - Lima. This takes slightly longer, but is considerably less boring.

thanks for your reply.

I read it takes 72 hours in one go and can be done but worried how safe the buses and trip would be... And if i take time i have to worry about other things and i'm traveling by myself... is it safe for a girl to do that trip? i'm meeting people in lima and then we travel for 3 months taking time back to BA.

And about Bolivia, i will do it on the way back stopping along in places of interest but as for taking the bus to Peru thru Bolivia i was told not recommended and better thru Chile (then again is it safe in the Andes...?)...

Don't worry about safety: if you exercise normal caution, you should be fine.

Re travel times: you may well be right with those 72 hours, it's a long time since I did that particular stretch. Still, taking a single international bus is bound to be a ripoff compared to changing busses in the places I mentioned.

Re route: as I said, the Chilean alternative is definitely quicker, but also a lot more boring. The panamericana is just plainly uninteresting.

thanks for all the tips much appreciated!

now i am considering taking it a bit slower with stop overs on local buses instead of more expensive international ones but still via chile even though it's boring but the quickest. then i will do the more interesting route thru bolivia when going back south in 3 months.

cheers!
