sydney to melbourne drive

hey there,

Hi,

If you have a few days then the Coast Road (Princess Highway) from Sydney to melbourne is the way to go. There is some beautiful scenery on the way and the ocean awesome. There are some great little towns and sea side communities on the way.

Its hard to reccommend anything as I have no idea what interests you.

I used to own a motor home and found no one really cares if you stop in an ocean side car park overnight or anywhere where you can get off the road a bit so you are not a danger to yourself or other road users. Just dont make it look too much like you are setting up camp and no one will care.

Local councils prefer you to use camp grounds but I have never had any problems. I would stop at a beach explore etc through the day and then find a nice tranquil spot before dark park there and enjoy.

At the very worst a parks ranger or a council ranger may tell you that you cant camp there, so no real trouble at all if that happens simply find another spot and enjoy.

Councils and there representatives are not hard to live with and you really shouldnt have any problems, just dont be blatent about it.

Hope this helps you,

Lex

Its an easy drive, I done many trips up and down the Hume hwy(fastest route) and one along the Pacific hwy

Both ways are good for tourists to drive, it depends on weather, and what interests you the most.

If you're only doin the run once then I recommend the Hume Hwy as it offers a more classical "Australian" venture, I also recommend including a detour through Canberra.

Head south out of Sydney and aim for a first night maybe around Mollymook or Jervis Bay. Then head south making sure you stop at Pebbly Beach to see the Kangaroos on the Beach. Past Batemans Bay perhaps turn inland for a bit of culture in Canberra. Everything, nearly everything. in Canberra is free. I mean attractions such as museums and galleries and you can wander just about everywhere in Parliament House; and park underneath for free as well. For a bit more country head south on the Monaro Highway towards the south coast of Victoria and Lakes Entrance. Then head West to Wilsons Promonotory National Park, which I personally think is spectacular. Either way I'm sure you'll love the south coast of NSW.
