You can visit this website http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/bangkok.html for a list of good and affordable hotels in Bangkok. it can range from 19 dollars to 100 dollars. well, if you will be traveling the country a lot, I'd say you better set up a bank account with a bank that has a branch in Thailand so in case you would run out of money.
A good place to check rooms rates is right here on TP. Left panel, click on 'accommodation'. Select 'budget accom'. select 'Thailand', select 'Bangkok'. Many GHs under 500 baht. Take a look at Udee BKK or Cosy BKK Place for example.
I spend roughly$30/day total. Figure $1K for the month.
In bang kok just turn up on Kho san road and you'll find somewhere day or night, as for kho pang yang - coral bungalows is good, pricey though! But if your intending to go for full moon, its awesome cos it hold soooooo many events! I went to thailand for a month and spent £900 and i didn't feel as if i were living on a buget at all, i bought so much stuff, most of which i didn't need to!

Was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for accommodation in Bagkok and also for Ko Phangan? Also how much money do you need roughly for a month in Thailand?

When Ko Phangan is mentioned that is more often by someone who is very young. If you are in this young category then perhaps a hotel or hostel in the Khao San Road area will do for you in Bangkok.
If you are slightly more mature then perhaps a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road or Siam area of Bangkok will do so you can also use the Skytrain rapid transit service. The Skytrain is an overhead rail service that can take you to many popular tourist areas of Bangkok including Patpong night market, MBK, Chatuchak, Ekamai bus station and a connection for the subway at Asok.
