Seems the wiring in my point & shoot Canon came unstuck from the ccd chip giving a distorted 'smeared paint' kind of look in the preview, or sometimes nothing at all. This happened over a year ago in Morocco and I just resigned myself to eventually replacing it. But apparently this is a 'known fault' caused by higher temperatures softening the wiring adhesive and Canon will fix it out of warranty. I only found out by accident and couldn't believe how many different makes have 'known faults'.
