Brussels or Budapest??

Hi! I am going to Europe this summer and will be traveling all over. For the first month I will be visiting switzerland, italy and austria. From there my friend and I plan to travel for a few weeks. We have narrowed it down to one of either two options. We will be meeting up in Vienna Austria and then from there we have 2 options:

Vienna-Budapest is a very logical chain.
It's lot of common in culture since it was one Austro-Hungary Empire.

Brussels has some in common with Amsterdam - as part of cultural background is Flemish. The "second half" is French influence, and these "layers" (it's not really the mix of two) makes Brussels special. Here is Belgian chocolad - the best in the world and Belgian Beer which doesn't need my reccomendations, plus and all the rest of culinar expirience. Brussels is the capital of Art Nouveau as well.

Budapest is very nice, but I would go to Brussels.

Budapest.
There are at least 3 cities in Belgium which are far more interesting and more beautiful than Brussles itself, namely Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. So if you go to that part of Europe, make it one or a few of those cities.
Otherwise again: Budapest.

oh, yea, Mike is right about Belgium.
I was thinking about these cities too - instead of Brussels.

Budapest will be my personal choice. I've been there once but have never forgot about the Trip. It really has so much to visit.

This is a tough one. Both offer so much beauty and history.

I suppose it depends how much time you would like to spend in the cities. Brussels I would recommend 2 days for, whereas Budapest I would recommend 3 days.

Though Brugges, Ghent and Antwerpen are all wonderful cities, I would disagree with Utrecht and not recommend them over Brussels. If you have time, they would make an excellent addition to your time in Belgium.

I was mesmerized by the Grand Place area of Brussels, it really is quintessential Europe.
Budapest was also beautiful, especially crossing the Danube into Buda to see the Castle.

I think your #2 options gives you a better diversified trip through Europe, though of your list, Vienna is the only city I've never been to.

I think I'd lean towards Brussels. The frites won my heart over! But both options are wonderful and you'll love both Brussels and Budapest.

I have never been to Budapest, however I lived and worked in brussels for 3 months in a youth hostel and loved it. Brussels has a great life to it, its not too big and if you speak English you will be understood for sure. Signs in Brussels are in French, Dutch and English for the most part and there is lots to see and do , not to mention TASTE! Mhhh delicious chocolate, cheap beer, absynth, fries, waffles!!, falafels!! And the best thing is, you walk so much that you dont get fat hahaha :P

Stick to the touristy areas and out of the poorer areas and you will be fine! Many recommend visiting the ''marolles'' ( below the Palais de Justice) , my only recommendation is do it before dark 100%, its great in the day, but I would not hang out there at night.

If you wanted to be in Brussels a few days, you could even do a side trip to Gent or Brugges, both less than an hour train ride and about 10 euros for the ticket!
