Australia has become really expensive, and you can certainly burn through your money fast with accommodations, food, and travel expenses in such a big country. Your best bet and probably the most fun is to try Sign up now and go stay in some of the accommodations in the UK or Europe to see if you like it, and this way you will be able to rack up some good reviews too which will help you be excepted in Aus next year.

That is definately something that I would look into doing & I've been told during my time as a travel agent that Australia has become expensive from customers that travelled there, especially due to the drop in exchange rates - but realistically, how far could I get on £4k???
My plan is to do southern Oz, starting in Brisbane and travelling across the south coast then ending up in Perth.

I am heading over with roughly 6000 Canadian dollars and will be looking for work and suplement my income that way. I've done the research and if you a good at somewhat budgeting you should be fine. You post you say you are wanting to work while you're there so as long as you don't spend 3 months just drinking and eating your money away you should be fine. I expect to use at least 1000$ in my first month of just exploring sydney and melbourne. then in April i will be heading up to Cairns and trying to find work there.
