do it yourself budget holiday china vietnam cambodia shangha

Hi,
My name is Michelle, could anybody help me find best way to travel on a budget with comfortable bed, great food, quality markets souveniers, etc and best route to travel.
Any handy tips and info appreciated.

I can make some recommendations on the Cambodian front -

Make sure you take at least 2 days when going to Angkor Wat. You can hire bicycles to ride around to each of the different temples and you see more that way than if you're on a tour. Also, try to make sure you stay until dusk (it's the most awesome time to be there).

As for Phnom Penh - the only suggestion i have is try not to wear a backpack around the city. There are heaps of kids on mopeds that seem to pull them right off your back. If you carry a shoulder strapped bag it also makes you seem more like an expat and less likely that you are carrying anyhting of value on you.

Sinoukville is pretty cool. It's a beach/resort/tourist area where you can stay in guest houses for less than $5 - 10 USD p/night. I stayed at a place called Serendipity Beach. Highly recommend it.

Hi noincue,
Thanks for the input I will put that on my to do list.
If anyone else has any more tips that would be great.

My partner and myself were thinking maybe we could start at Vietnam?? Laos, Thailand, one of the neighbouring countries spend few weeks there and head into China. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where they would start.....and once into China head to Beijing and maybe on the way out do Shanghai, we are not really sure.

We ideally would like to see the villages and lifestyles, not so much the commercial side of things, also Markets with quality souveniers not junk.

Anybody who has done a similar trip, we would love to hear from you.

Thanks all and thanks again noincue.

Hi Michelle,

If you want to travel to Viet, Cam and China, 50% of your budget is transportation (flight ticket, bus, taxi...), 20% for hotel room and 20% for eating and entertainment.

For cheap flight ticket, you should book direct on Vietnam Airline or cheaper one, Jetstar.
For cheap bus/ train/ cruiser... you also are advised to buy direct from the station, not through hotel or travel agency.

For cheap hotel, you should come to hotel, have a look at the room, discuss with the receptionist for the best price. Some hotel maygive a discount. If they don't lower the price, they may add some free service such as free taxi to airport, free breakfast or free something.

Remember one thing, it's better if you buy anything yourself. The hotel staff, travel agent... may be very eager to help but they charge you service fee.

Have anice trip, Michelle.
