first time to europe! need travel advice :)

HI!! I am a college student who is about to go to europe this summer for the first time! I am planning on traveling for about 2 weeks with my best friend and we need recommendations on where to go! Between the two of us we will have already seen a good amount of Italy, Paris, Switzerland and a few places in Austria. We are currently considering Prague, Munich, Madrid, Athens, Munich, Berlin, Brussels, Amsterdam, London and Barcelona. We only have 2 weeks to travel and we want to get the most out of our experience! Anyone have any suggestions on where to go or what to do and see!?!

Very little time. Maybe a week seeing London and places not too far away then a cheap flight (like Ryanair) to Madrid, Toledo, etc and leave from Barcelona.

Don't try to do too much as travelling long distances takes time.

Prices go up in June and even higher in July and August with school holidays. Accommodation and transport fills up. Not the best time to go.

hi! 2 weeks is short time, if you wanna enjoy your trip you need combine places that are on short distance and connected well. It's pity to spend time on the transportation and frequent relocation, good proportion btw the way and the say will b 10/90. If you plan it well and do all possible preparations for advance (booking, transportation planning and kind of brief planning of your stay in every of places u wanna visit) then you have a good chance to enjoy your trip and do a lot.
According to your priorities and your "list", I thought about few possible combinations. The main difficulty is to "cut out" what u NOT going to see. mixing up places like London, Barcelona and Berlin will be a huge mistake - you will not see anyone of them.
So, here r the options for u and your friends:

LONDON - great choice. Going to London forget about anything else - London is too big an too much to see/do there, that 2 weeks will b not enuf. As a "bonus" you may do short (daily) trips out - 1 day Greenwich and 1 day Cambridge /or Oxford

PRAGUE is beauiful, need about 3 days. Not too far from VIENNA - 3-4 days for briefly look and BRATISLAVA (which is relatively minor, 1 day is enough). Then BUDAPEST (3 days). With all relocations your time will go with these four. If you feel that it's oo short - then can miss Bratislava.

MUNICH - lovely! (3days +). It can be combined with SALZBURG (Austria) for 1-2 days. The rest of time I would spend in small towns in area of these two main stops. There are so many small places in Salzburgland and each one is a jem, that you never could get bored with it. You can also try to "jump" from there to North Italy if it sound like an option for you.

MADRID is a big city. At least a week need there. Theoretically it can be combined with Barcelona, which is formally Spain but actually Catalonia (very different character), but it is far away. I think it's not the best idea. instead you can do Madrid with something less distanced in Spain. 2 or 3 additional places.

ATHENS - I really love Greece very much, but Athens are quite boring, at my opinion. And it's far from anything else.

BERLIN - wow, its interesting. Need a week or so, include 1 day in Potsdam (daily trip, short run by train). the prob is that Berlin is far from other places u wanna see. It means long run by train - you will miss at least a full day of your travel on transportation. You can easily spend whole 2 weeks in Berlin with couple of days out - there are more then Potsdam only, but as I understand u come from over the sea and u sure wanna more then one place, arent u?

BRUSSELS & AMSTERDAM and then add LUXEMBURG there. Yes, it's possible. You have many other interesing spots in Netherlands and Belgium, not only their capitals. Can be an option.

There are many and many others, that you didn't mention, and yes, it's impossible to get all. As u see - it even not possible to get that much as u named. I seen people who run through places like mad, just for marking "V" (visited) - I dont get what a "pleasure" in it and never understand the reason for "running through".

Good luck with your choices and enjoy Europe!
:-)
cheers,
vanessa

I nice idea - and one I've done personally - is to fly to Viennf a then on to Bratislava and then to Budapest before taking the train from Budapest to Split in Croatia.

It's easily done and you get to cover pieces of 4 countries. Give yourself a couple of days in Croatia traveling down the coast towards Dubrovnik before flying out.

Otherwise a simpler and less time intensive trip would be to fly direct to Budapest and spend a couple of days there before traveling by train to Zagreb and then Split. Once in Split take the ferry - very cheap - out to the island of Hvar which is pretty party centred - it used to be quiet but that's changed.

Just a couple of ideas.

Avoid Athens. Not only is it boring and out of the way, there is also quite a bit of civil unrest.
