East Coast advice

mcmin has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Hi Mcmin,

I dont know much about sydney and south that way, but being based up in Cairns means I know alot more about life up here. My advice for up this way is don't plan anything. There are many hostels in and around cairns for backpackers.

I'm going to post a link up about all the things you can do once you get here. Do not book them until you get here, save yourself some money. If you are over 23, and have a uk licence, think about renting a car, saves yourself a lot in bus fares, and tours that you can do by car.

I recommend heading up to Cape trib for a night or two, stay at Pk's jungle village great place for the backpackers, take a swim at mossman gorge, spend a day at the port douglas markets, head up to kuranda, go to the reef or one of the islands. Fitzroy Island, Green island etc, shop around when you get here.
and pm me if you decide you need a car whilst in cairns.

Have a safe trip feel free to ask me anything else.
Cheers

Hey dude we also doing Sydney - Cairns trip for whole of March 2010. We have a campervan so if ya get stuck along the way or need a lift let me know coz if we in the area you can jump in for a ride.

We went from Sydney to Cairns in April 2009. Was amazing! Took a camper, woke up and went for a dip in random beaches we came across, met some great aussies (great people) who took us night fishing, shared drinks round the fire with, helped us get our van out of the mud after getting stuck! We stopped off at Byron Bay which was the best place we found to party! was there over easter and the blues festival was on so great atmosphere.

All i would do is not under budget. We did not take enough money so more the merrier! Recomend seeing the great barrier reef - stunning and has to be done!

Hi mate, my favourites on the east coast are:

- Blue Mountains for hiking, swimming and scenery
- Byron Bay for nightlife, surfing and beach
- Fraser Island for lakes, scenery and relaxing
- Eungella National Park for hiking, scenery, waterfalls, platypus
- Airlie Beach for access to Whitsunday Islands, sailing, relaxing, snorkelling, Whitehaven Beach
- Mission Beach, for the beach
- Cairns for access to the Great Barrier reef, snorkelling, diving, access to Atherton Table Lands, Cape Tribulation

The price of tours will depend on how much you want to pay, snorkelling/diving daytrips out of Cairns start at about $60.
