Do you want to save money? If you do, the answer is yes. I've not heard of anyone (as far as I know) who get last minute cheap train tickets.
Certain reduction even requires booking a certain number of days ahead. Some discounted tickets are available in limited number so once they're gone, they're gone. The downside is, you'll need to have nailed down your itinerary. Most of the cheapest rate tickets are non-changeable, non-exchangeable, non-transferable.
