Hi, I have been in Austrilia since March and have been traveling with some friends but this will be the first time I'll be on my own now. I am going to Byron Bay next week, does anybody know any cheap and friendly hostels? I'm not a fan of the big ones, I like small, homly ones where you can get to know everybody and hopfully find some people who I can go traveling with up the east coast? If anybody knows any hostels like this, please let me know,

Most of the hostels in Byron Bay are the smaller, homely variety just because of laws in place in town (can't build above tree level for example). When I was there the place to be was always the Arts Factory, which actually looks like it has now been bought by Nomads and renamed . It still ranks highly amongst the Byron hostels, and one advantage of being part of a chain like Nomads is you should always get a certain level of service/cleanliness etc. I've also stayed at the YHA and another one right in the centre of town that I can't remember the name of. All have been just fine.

I will recommend YHA Byron Bay, Cape Byron.
The standard is good, and it's a good relaxed vibe there. And it's easy to get to know people. It's close to the beach as well.

You are a little limited since Byron Bay can be very upscale. Depending on your price range I'd look around and call up the places you are thinking of staying at and just get a feel talking to the clerks. I will second lucyone's recommendation, as YHA is great, but I'd look around to get a better idea.
A good address to find information in Byron Bay is the Byron Bay Visitor Centre. They are NON-PROFIT and offer free brochures and maps. You can also find some cheap accommodation in the backpacker section of their website www.visitbyronbay.com

Byron bay is the great place..full of natural beauty and you can easily find the less expensive accommodation there.
