Hi all, in new on here and traveling to Mumbai Wed 09/03. On a free flight (open ticket) so just winging it. Not even booked a hotel yet, although i cant see that been a problem. Hopefully just book for 1 night only and plan when i get there. Would love to hear any good tips from getting out of the airport and getting a taxi to wherever i've booked. Whats the average fare from airport to Mumbai City centre? Dos & donts etc etc etc. I've done a fair amount of travel Inc Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada & USA so im not a novice really but any useful info is a bonus when going somewhere for the first time Hopefully i can update all here with photos when i get back Many thanks Peter Fox.

Your previous travel experience will not count much when you go first time to India. Therefore, I would read the entire article, which will give you a lot of very useful info.
When I was in Mumbai I had difficulty finding lodging in tourist areas. They fill up quickly, so if there is a way - I would try to book something. But use guide book or internet forum infos on lodging quality/reviews and prices. If you book it through some agent, you will end up paying multiple. Just call the number of the hotel and make the reservation.

Mumbai is a fun place, there will be so many taxis waiting outside the airport for you when you arrive. Cant remember how much money it is, but nothing is expensive in India (compared to western prices)...we got asked to be extras in a bollywood movie in Mumbai, get experience. If you are heading south of Mumbai, close to Goa is a town called Hampi..one of my favourite places on the earth..huge boulders everywhere you look and really spiritual...go see!
When we were in Mumbai, we stayed in the area quite close to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Train Station. It was definitely spendy (but the entire city is relative to anywhere else) but worth the few extra dollars for the good location (it's a nice area of Mumbai to walk about) and proximity to the train station.
If you are heading South to Goa, I would recommend a visit to Arambol for sure. It was the beach area that we found to be the most peaceful with a great vibe.
