Is it safe to travel to Morocco?

Globetrotter30 has indicated that this thread is about Morocco

Hi Steve, i think ,there is no risk or problem in Morocco,i go every 2,3 months there, and there is no reason to have any troubles.. the "disturbs" are not strongers like in other countries (algeria,egypt..) ,and there is not cause for the foreigners..its an internal situation, and only a little bit more problems in the North (Tanger,Al Hoceima) but the "tourists" are always welcome..if we don't go ,or involve,on political discussions with them..have good trip,Dany

the political unrest issue has been discussed at length on another popular website called
tripadvisor
I live in Marrakech and can assure you that life is very normal. apart for the 20 feb demonstration when some thug on the loose broke banks windows and some cars , people are going baout their businesses as usual and enjoying their lives

Hi Steve

There have been some good articles in the press recently - the BBC and 'Is the Arab revolution running out of steam?', which didn't even bother to mention Morocco; and amazingly, Fox News on the 'Moroccan Exception'.

Morocco is a constitutional monarchy and the people can change the Prime Minister and Parliament; the UN judged the last elections as free and fair. There's no 'dictator' to change and the king is highly regarded - with good reason.

Strikes, demonstrations and protests are a normal part of life here, as they are in most lively democracy's.

There was trouble on 20 February largely after the protest marches when hooligans took over and caused all sorts of problems (which were very widely reported), perhaps not helped by an almost total lack of the normal police presence, except in the north.

Morocco is extremely safe and supremely stable. Statistics are hard to come by, but I'd be staggered if crime wasn't much lower than our European neighbours. The monarchy have been in power for over 300 years (that's longer than the current British Royal family).

Hope that helps.

Thanks one and all for all the replies!i'm definitely starting to feel more assured that Morocco is safe to visit at the moment.i'll focus more about my trip now which i reckon it will be an exciting adventure.
Thanks again

Off topic here, but this conveniently forgets when the sovereignty of Morocco was held by France for half the 20th century, rather than by the Sultan. The current line of Kings, rather than Sultans, goes back to 1957 I believe?

France never took sovereignty over Morocco, and Morocco was never a French colony; it was styled as a 'Protectorate'.

There was an Alouite Sultan on the throne throughout the French occupation, at the end of which the then Sultan proclaimed himself king.
