I'm flying to Sydney in June and am planning on staying in Australia for around a year, and I too am alone. A great website I will be using to find work similar to what you mentioned is www.helpx.net - I think it costs £20 to sign up (well it was two years ago when I joined) and the membership lasts for 2 years. It's the same concept as wwoofing, but unlike the wwoof website, you don't have to pay per geographic region- HelpX covers the whole world. If you're wary about paying the money then you can browse the site for free, you just can't see their contact details! Highly recommended though, I helped out for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week on an organic farm in Portugal two years ago, through that site, and had one of the best months of my life.
