Where abouts in Asia are you going? It really depends on the countries and areas you are going to. I am leaving for Thailand on 21st March and will be going to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia. The only places I will need them for is some places in Cambodia and Vietnam. I managed to get around 6 weeks worth of malaria tablets for around £30 (not too expensive).

Hi i go in june, i need malarials too the risk of malaria its a very nasty thing to get too for the sake of ££.
Ive had to have the japanese encephalitis injection too as we are jungle trekking £180 for that im doing a month in asia so for 40 malarone tablets (no side effects on these) are £90 ish.
If you are city bound they usually do not reccomend it.

Thanks for your responses...we are travelling, N & S Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali, Singapore so a mixture of everything really!
I will look into the Malarone Tablets see what sort of prices i can get!

I travelled in malaria affected zones for more than a year. I never took any pills. However, I always had a box of malaria pills on me. Three doctors in three countries suggested that since I would be in affected areas for too long, taking malaria pills on long term is not advisable and the best is to take the pills only when you actually get sick with it.
I met travellers who had had malaria, some said it was horrible, some said it was like catching a flu.
In any case, it is always recommended to use mosquito repellent spray that contains deet (above 30). In south east asia or india you can also find citronella for a very cheap price, that turned out to be quite effective in my case against mosquitos.
How affected the actual area is largely depends on actual weather and level of urbanization. Heavy rains, forests, rice paddies, swamps, river, lakes - are usually the best soil for mosquitos. Thus, extra precaution is advised. During dry season or at dry areas, you will seldom see mosquitos.
You can also inquire locals, they normally know if malaria is a problem indeed.
Most critical period of the day: is during sunset. You can also protect yourself by wearing long sleeve light shirt/pants.
And don't be over concerned: not every mosquito carries malaria...
At beginning I carried a mosquito net too. It turned out to be completely useless. They always provide with mosquito net in case it is needed.

My Girlfriend's Dad is travel doctor and he recommened us Malaria tablets for Cambodia and Vietnam.....
And of course, if you aren't pregnant, or on birth control tablets you can use doxycycline tablets instead of the malarone and Doxy is really, really cheap - maybe $10 for 2 months worth (and that's even pricey).
The only downside with doxycycline is that it does make some people a bit hypersensitive to sunlight - so sunblock and keeping covered up is really important.

I spent 3 months travelling in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos last year and didn't take any Malaria tablets, spoke to a number of travellers who had done the same and didn't find anyone who had been affected. Obviously there is a risk involved so it depends on your outlook really, take the risk of play safe???

Ive also been informed that Vitamin B1 or is it B12?? Is a deterrent for the pesky things, as they do not seem to like the taste as much!!
So could be a cheaper alternative!
