Aussies looking to road trip in 2013

Well after a year or so of saving my beautiful fiancé, my best friend and his fiancéand myself are beginning to "plan" our trip to America, the basic guide for what we want to do is start in New York and drive any which way we chose to Los Angeles, now I have read alot of threads about buying VS renting a car, noW unlike most people I have read about we are looking to spend between 6k to 8k on a largish SUV (navigato, tahoe ect) we're accounting for roughly 1k for insurance/rego/roadside, and roughly 4k for petrol and or repairs (trip being 2/3 months). Is this a good budget? The reason were looking to spend so much is we want a largish vehicle, and Plan to sell it in either LA or take it back to New York for a friend to sell on our behalf for is for around 1 to 2k cheaper then we buyY it for.

Sounds like a realistic plan to me, although 6K to 8K won't get you a large SUV unless you are buying something really old, or else just renting for the period. If renting (for example through a major car agency), try to book your SUV really early--and then if they will arrange a special rate for you (because of the longer-term time of your rental) or will reduce the "drop-off" fee for finishing your trip somewhere besides where you started it. (These drop off fees can be enormous--like $500 to $700 extra).

As an alternative--which would probably work well for you, plan your trip so that you tour the whole country starting in New York and then ending back in New York (thus eliminating the drop off fee and also allowing you to not need any airfare except for the round-trip to New York.

Personally, I would start my trip at the closest spot to Los Angeles, rent there, and then plan to end back there at the end of the trip. You can then drive the SUV across the northern/middle states to New York and back across the southern states Los Angeles.

One last thing, Universal Studios is in Orlando, Florida (not near New Orleans, Louisiana). I presume that was just a misprint on your part (or misunderstanding on my part when reading your post). Have a great trip

One last thing I should mention. Right now there seems to be a lot of "saber-rattling" between Iran and the US--with many expecting that Israel will attack Iran soon--and Iran has said that they would consider that an attack from the US (and respond as such).

If a war breaks out between the US and Iran, this is likely to affect gas prices in the US fairly adversely (most say prices per gallon will jump from $3.80 to around $4.50 or even $5.00) and may also affect times at airport security checkpoints and in coming through customs. If so, this would affect the cost of your trip, so keep this in mind and plan for higher gas costs than originally planned.
