First time travels to Oz need advice

Hi there,

June is probably one of the best times to start off a trip up north in Cairns! It's REALLY hot up there in the summer months, and because of the jellyfish, it's a lot harder to swim etc then too, so winter really is the recommended time to be up north (probably still around 30 degrees, just less rain than in the summer 'rainy' months). If you're there three months, you'd end up in Sydney in August/September, which are beautiful months to be there in terms of weather. They're also not quite as packed as December, so accommodation is a bit easier to find. In other words, nothing wrong with the route or timing.

I'd probably go for either a car or a bus for the trip. The train is great, but it won't get you as near the coast.

With regards to spending money, the sky is really the limit You can get a decent idea of what you will spend on accommodation by having a look at some of the different budget accommodation options in for example and here on TP. Both those pages include a graph on the right hand side with averages throughout the year based on prior searches (both shared hostel beds and privates). I think you'd spend 500 AUD a week a person pretty quick if you include some tours, travelling costs and accommodation. Travelling as a pair will probably save you a little, and if you push it you could probably get by on 750 AUD a week together. Keep in mind that two beds in a hostel will probably already be 350 AUD a week though, so that only leaves 400 for travelling/food etc.

Thanks for the advice it's been really helpful. Certainly gave me alot to think about. I may have under estimated the expense of this trip, my budget was way off. Better start saving a bit harder
Thanks again

Whatever you do don't use the public train system to get to Sydney, use the long distance trains, the public train system is probably the worst. But I agree, maybe not use a train, a car would be a lot funner and you'd get experience more of the culture. Besides, who doesn't love a road trip? Having said that, the landscape in Oz isn't very nice and driving on highways can get boring.

I went to Hawaii at the end of last year and got my mind repeatedly blown by the scenery. It sucks only doing the equivalent of about 60kph but the views make that easier. In Aus you do 100-110kph but the scenery is all very similar, and such long stretches. Takes 12 hours to get from Brisbane to Sydney. Having said all that, road trips are massive fun, I drove from Launceston, Tasmania to Brisbane last year and it was a lot of fun.
