North and Central America- advice please

Hey,
My partner and I are planning a trip starting in May 2012. We need advice for the Americas part of our trip

I would fly across America. It's a LONG way by train, and not that cheap.

I liked Panama but not a lot there. Nicaragua and Honduras are not overly safe. When people go to Belize it is generally to an island off of the coast. While I had no trouble there I did not wholly feel safe in Belize City and was glad to leave it.

Guatemala, even the main city is quite third world but I thought it OK and roads were very poor and the buses struggled with them, taking a long time getting from A to B.

Do visit Tikal which is a large archaeological site. Maps are pretty useless and contradictory, and the guides have removed sign posts so you will use them instead, but it is easy to wander around alone. I quite liked Flores which is nearby and a nice little town by a lake.

If you go hiking make sure you have plenty of water with you as you can be a long way from anywhere.

America is expensive. The rest are quite cheap. One of your biggest costs will be long distance travelling.

Takes 2-3 days typically NY-LA (my sister did it last year) and cost MORE than flying.
