Week-long break in April departing from Brisbane? Ideas?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas of where to head for a week-long trip during April that is fairly inexpensive (in Backpacker terms).

I will be in Brisbane but would like to head a little further out, does anybody have any within reach (train, bus) destinations. Will be with a lady so I hope to make it memorable. Depending on cost, maybe Cairns or Byron Bay or something along those lines.

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers :D

I don't know what your immigration status is, but you can fly from Gold Coast to Auckland for only a little more than it would cost you to fly up to Cairns. New Zealand can be a bit hit and miss with the weather at anytime of the year, but April can see some nice sunny days. From Auckland you can rent a car and do a quick trip up to the Bay of Islands, then over to the Kauri trees forest then down to Piha. Or any number of quaint little tucked away places.

Byron is a nice choice, but can be expensive like all Australia. Some of the hinterland towns near Byron, are worth a tour if you rent a car.

Fraser Island might be a good option if you can rent a 4x4 to drive over there.

I was going to suggest Fraser Island too - you could get to Hervey Bay (about 2 hrs north of Bris), lots of backpacker accom there too and then go on a tour across to the island which are reasonably priced, not too many ppl, and leave quite regularly, although more fun to self drive if you can!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I would like to do them all eventually.
I think as Fraser Island is quite close then that could be a good option!

Is the 4x4 driving all it's cracked up to be?

It's quite a laugh yes, but very dangerous. Every year people DIE because they drive too fast on the main beach and swerve and flip the landcruisers that are too top heavy. Either that or because its a beach there are no painted lines for the idiots to remember what side they should drive on and they actually crash head on into each other.

As a couple, if you are going to sign up with one of the standard outfits, you need to be careful of the group you go out with. You are going to be stuck with them for 3 or 4 days and if you get someone that thinks they have the right to smoke in the vehicle, or a few of them that want to drink all day and night, it can become quite tiresome and dangerous. The only suggestion I can make, is make sure you know who you are going with before you part with any cash.

My husband and I visited Fraser Island on a guided tour in June last year. We really enjoyed it, but the terrain is really rough in some spots - if you were gonna be self-driving you'd definitely want to be experienced in 4wd. We really enjoyed the trip though, just a day trip departing and returning to our accommodation in Noosa. Noosa was great, we had been on the Gold Coast for months, so Noosa was a welcome change of pace, much smaller and slower but still with great beach and things to see and do
