12 month workin hol, starting the middle of september in Oz

Hi me & 2 friends are planning a trip to Oz with 12month working visas. weve not got any ideas yet set in stone & as long as were away from england we will be happy, ive come up with the idea of flying to carins, spending a few weeks there get to meet some people, get some names of hot spots from the people who just come from the opposite direction, then BUY a camper van & travel right down the east coast in no rush, seein & partyin as much as possible 'maybe some fruit picking on the way for extra cash', untill we get to melbourne where we already have friends living. After so long there weather its on my own or not i was going to fly to perth where i have another friend already living there & was going to start lookin for a real job 'with a trade & contacts behind me iam told it shouldnt be to hard'.

Hi Lee,

How long is the east coast roughly...?
Cairns to Melbourne is about 3700km travelling by the coast

Is is easy enough to buy camper vans etc off other backpackers who are leaving & what they cost roughly..?
It's possible, usually they advertise on billboards at hostels and Cairns seems to be a popular departure location so it's probably a good spot to buy. Price will depend on the condition and features, it's probably best to buy a van that's registered in the state you're leaving from. To get a general idea of cost have a look on , and

what sort of budget am i lookin at...?
Depends what you plan on doing, costs on the east cost are generally higher than elsewhere.

how due go about insuring the van or do you even need insurance, am told you might not..?
I'd highly recommend at least 3rd party property insurance, that way if you run into a merc you only lose your van and insurance will pay for repairing the other vehicle. You can get this online from any major Australian insurer, , etc. they'll even do an online quote. In NSW 3rd party injury insurance is compulsory and any registered vehicle will come with it.

Good luck!

- Tim

Cheers tim,

massive help, ran my idea by the lads today & they was just as excited as i am about it. gonna set our van budget @ around the $4000 mark seen as were only gonna be using it for 21/2 months. Had a look on gumtree.au to get an idea.
are you traveling yourself..?

This differs slightly in different states - for Victoria compulsory third party insurance is included in the registration, so no need to shop at different insurance companies for it.
