does anyone have any advice on the best way to travel from melbourne to sydney? obviously by best i mean cheapest! i think its where we'll be going next.
Sharing a ride with someone else who has a car is probably the cheapest option.
Flights are pretty darned cheap as well these days. You can get them at around $40 one way. Add to that though, the cost of getting to and from the airport ($16 in Mel for airport shuttle bus, $15.80 for train in Sydney). And depending on the hour of the day the flight prices can be more as well of course.
A bus fare between Melbourne and Sydney start at $60. So you might save about $10 This will be a night fare though I think, which means you will need to sleep on the bus. Yes, it's uncomfortable, but on the bright side you'll save on accommodation
Trains are not that cheap. About $90 one way.

However if you are travelling to cairns after syd much better buying the melb to cairns pass $375 that also means you can travel 4 times overnight as well saving 4 nights accom along the way.

Just checked for a ticket next Saturday, and got $60 with a backpacker discount, or $65 without (this was for the overnight service - day service slightly more).
