Right, I'm 21 and I'm going traveling for a good 12 months. Thailand, Australia, Fiji and America.. I know a lot of people my age who have done a similar travel and all of them make out all they really did was have fun, drink, party, sight see and a bit of work. But mostly party....
It is what you make of it. I'm not a "party-traveller". If you want to party, there's plenty of opportunities to. If you don't want to, well, then you can just ignore it all and do your own thing. Entirely up to you.
Heading out into the world really gives you the chance to decide for yourself what you want to be doing. You can stay in hostels, couch surf, work on organic farms (wwoof'ing), work in call centers, take short courses, do an internship, do some volunteering or just party all the time (if you have the cash) or, well, the list goes on and on forever because it's really unlimited. Don't just do whatever your friends did. Decide for yourself what you want to get out of the experience and give it a shot. What's there to lose huh!?
