I'm heading to New Zealand in a few months and on to South America after that. Having just looked at flight prices (OMG) I wondered if there was an alternative. Is it possible to work on a boat for the distance? Has anyone done that? Any advice appreciated. Thank you!

Some cargo ship companies offer on board service, but it's basically like a luxurious cargo travel or an adventurous cruise trip... they are very expensive. Here, obviously you don't have to work.

I am also not sure that the route you're planning is a regular route for cargo ships.
Maybe best is to call cargo companies in NZ or go to a big port and ask the harbourmaster.
If you want to fly: probably the cheapest option is to fly to US (e.g. LA) and take the crap but cheap "spiritair" airline down (through Florida) to Colombia/Peru.

if you book flight tickets to the US, note that big airline companies may penalize you for one way, so it might make sense to look at return tickets too.
with spiritair - it's more straightforward as it is a low cost...
It's certainly not cheap but you can get specials sometimes with Aerolineas Argentinas.
