Pretty much every single destination in New Zealand deserves at least two days spent there, for most it wouldn't be amiss to hang around for 3-5 days. The Kiwi Experience is enough of a rushed tour as it is; no need to give in to that and stay on the same bus throughout. I'd recommend just spending an extra night at each of their destinations (outside of their Mahinapua west coast night), which would give you a 19 day itinerary.
If you still can, I'd also recommend holding off on booking the oz experience until you've spent at least a few days on the kiwi experience; I personally found travelling with that type of backpacker bus (tour) not to my liking, and ended up just making my own way along. It sounds like you've already booked the kiwi experience, but at least with the oz experience you should know what you're getting yourself into first.
