Help Nedded!! Driving from California to Stgo Chile in June.

pepetrueno has indicated that this thread is about California

How are you getting around the Darian Gap?

Jose,

California is a car crazy place, and you will be able to find any number of "camper van" type vehicles for this trip once you are here. Almost anything you might want is likely available here.
An idea of what it is you want to buy and the amount you are willing to spend on it will help tremendously in recommending dealers and/or aficionado groups, for a particular type of vehicle.

No matter what you buy, I hope you have made room in your plans for a "shake down" cruise here in the US to make sure your rig is up to the journey? Parts and mechanics are plentiful here, but not so much so once you cross the Mexican border. (Depending somewhat on what you are driving, of course)

You will not have too much trouble buying and registering a vehicle in California. It would be helpful to have a friend with a permanent address here for documents to be sent to, but would not absolutely be required.

Stating your specific requirements and budget would get you some help from the forum, I'll wager.
Cheers, Bill

Hundreds of people drive portions this route every year. With proper planning/research it's very doable.

It's VERY easy to research this trip. There are loads of blogs detailing the route, border crossings, etc. Get off this website and start researching on sites like these:

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-American_Highway
http://www.go-panamerican.com/
http://www.escapeartist.com/Travel/eBooks/Driving_Pan-American_Highway/

First thing to Google is the Darien Gap. You'll have to ship your vehicle by sea from Panama to South America.

Have fun, you're looking at a great adventure...

Cheers,
Terry

I don't think these guys are doubting the do ability of the trip.

I thought they were looking for insight into the process, and ins and outs, of finding and buying a camper van in California to drive on their trip.

>VWSURFARI in California

Actually we are in that process, looking at campervans and pick up trucks (one with a pick up cover its not a bad option),

we are also doing research on the paperwork needed (mostly the paperwork needed for a non american traveller buying a US registered car and driving all the way down to Chile.)

But we are also open and thankful to recieve all kind of comments and tips on the trip.

Cheers
Jose
