Hello!

Don't worry, you will have a great time!
Everything depends on what you like to do. Some travelers like to visit Chiang Mai and see something other than just another beach! Some people want to just relax in a cheap area, or maybe just party in a place like Pattaya or Patong.
If you are young, just out of school maybe, choose the khao San area for your hotel. Lots of young tourists in that area. Into shopping maybe a hotel in the Pratunam area. Like nightlife, cheap hotels, malls, good restaurants and be able to use the Skytrain maybe choose the Sukhumvit Road area for your hotel.
You probably already know to wait to you get to Thailand to change your money over, if you did your homework and have a travel guide. You get a better exchange rate in Thailand than another country.
From the airport you have excellent transportation. You have bus and train travel up to midnight. After midnight use the public taxi. Lots of old posts on how to get from the airport to the city.
You will be fine as there are loads of solo travellers in the same situation as you! As well as Khao San Road as karazyal suggested, there is also the Soi Rambuttri area of Bangkok (very close to Ko San Road) which is also very popular with travellers. There are numerous options for beaches and islands - it depends how far you want to travel in your time frame and what kind of place you are looking for. Ko Chang and Ko Samet are relatively close to Bangkok, or you could go further afield to Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Phuket or Krabi to name but a few.
When travelling by taxi in Bangkok ensure the driver turns on the meter, and be wary of any drivers who tell you the place you want to go to is 'closed' - most likely it will not be and they will be trying to take you somewhere else where they will get commission for doing so. The same goes for tuk-tuk drivers.
